David Stokowski
22:43
Hey everyone! If you have any questions today, please feel free to add them here…I’ll answer as we go!
Jennifer Bauer
27:53
Yvonne, you rock!
Siobhan Markee
29:04
How did I get to Canvas Commons? Sorry.
Siobhan Markee
29:20
Never mind, I see it
Jessica Renteria
30:59
Would you make the edits before or after you import it?
David Stokowski
31:24
@Siobhan…there is a button on the left of your Canvas screen once you’ve logged in...
David Stokowski
31:54
It should say “Commons” underneath…it is a C with an arrow pointing to the right…if you select on that, it will take you into Commons.
David Stokowski
32:02
Let me know if you are not seeing that buttion...
David Stokowski
32:32
@Jessica…no the editing is done once you bring it into a course. At this point, you will take it into your Sandbox, and then you can edit...
David Stokowski
32:48
Commons allows you to preview the content…just not edit.
Jessica Renteria
32:56
Thank you
David Stokowski
33:04
:)
KristyWarren
33:30
David- can you explain the difference between the two templates that this group should choose between?
David Stokowski
33:42
@Kristy…sure thing!
KristyWarren
33:44
Oh thanks! One is subject based and one is week based.
David Stokowski
34:00
Jeff just mentioned this, but the differences are really about the graphics.
Jennifer Bauer
34:36
Does it matter which ones that we choose?
David Stokowski
35:05
The pages and other content may have slightly different formatting and/or focus…
Whitney Hoffman
35:23
Got it. And are all items in Commons free?
David Stokowski
35:27
@Jennifer…it doesn’t truly matter, it’s really more of a personal preference.
David Stokowski
35:43
@Whitney…yes! All items in Commons are free!
Kristen Marquette
35:50
So within our template, that is where we create our Modules? The template is the umbrella?
David Stokowski
36:46
@Kristen…yeah, the template is really just some graphics and pre-designed examples you can use to build on top of. And yes…your lesson plans etc. would then use Modules as the organization tool…
David Stokowski
37:00
We will be demonstrating modules before the end of our time this morning...
Jennifer Bauer
37:02
If we click to put it in our "sandbox" and the checkbox for all is checked where does that go?
Yvonne Casalnuovo
37:17
Can you "undo" the import from its application onto the sandbox course?
David Stokowski
37:54
@Jennifer…the content will be imported into your Sandbox course…the one where you currently have access.
David Stokowski
38:39
@Yvonne, there isn’t really an undo button…you can decide which content you want to have your students see by publishing or choosing to keep content unpublished. Alternatively you can delete the content you choose not to use from the template import.
Jeff Luttrell
39:07
I didn’t show how to import only select content…will do that after we reconvene
strujillo
42:31
If you choose something and later decide against it, how would you delete it or change it?
Michele Graham
43:24
I imported a package and it appears to have worked... but it didn't show that purple bar at the top that Jeff said should show at the top.??
David Stokowski
45:33
@Michelle…the important point is the content that comes over…
David Stokowski
45:47
The bar is simply a message...
David Stokowski
47:31
@strujillo, you have a couple of options. You can delete individual items from the course…but that’s a one-by-one process. You can also go to Settings (on the bottom of your Course navigation). Once there, you can go to “Rest Course Content” which will basically wipe your sandbox clean…this is NOT a recoverable action…so use sparingly!
David Stokowski
47:46
**Reset…not rest.
David Stokowski
48:14
CMD+Z, CTRL+Z (PC)
Alec Morgan
48:24
Ctrl-z is undo on PC
David Stokowski
48:36
CTRL-Z will be your BEST FRIEND!!
David Stokowski
50:20
If I have missed any questions…it wasn’t intentional! Feel free to ask again…I won’t be offended. ;)
Jennifer Bauer
56:31
Say in Parent Corner, do parents automatically get updates if you change or add to pages for them?
David Stokowski
57:28
@Jennifer, not necessarily. There is a check box on a page when you edit, to send an alert to users in the course. If you don’t select it…a notification will not be sent. The notification is sent to the student’s or parent’s email.
Jennifer Bauer
57:46
Thanks
KristyWarren
57:47
Can I duplicate an entire module?
David Stokowski
57:50
It’s at the bottom of the page.
Kristen Marquette
58:16
Do we need to have individual courses made for each subject area in our grade level for those assignments/grades to talk to Aeries so our grades import correctly?
David Stokowski
59:02
@Kristen, I believe so…I am not and Aeries expert, but I’m certain guidance will be given before you all start…
David Stokowski
59:57
However, with our student information systems that is general best practice...
Kristen Marquette
59:59
Ok, I was just unsure since I downloaded the template with all the subject areas inside of it.
David Stokowski
01:00:26
*our should be other…
David Stokowski
01:00:33
With OTHER SISs, that is generally the case.
KristyWarren
01:01:33
Thank you, that could be helpful, if you are following a week based module that is similar from week to week
David Stokowski
01:01:49
As a note…here is the Canvas Official Guide on Duplicating Modules: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26561-how-do-i-duplicate-a-module
David Stokowski
01:02:30
Assignments, Pages, and Discussions are duplicatable…Quizzes are not...
David Stokowski
01:03:16
The gotchas are all presented at the top of that help guide...
David Stokowski
01:03:47
Jeff will be going more into Module detail in a few...
KristyWarren
01:04:02
Thank you
Wendy Maul
01:04:12
How can you import from Google classroom
David Stokowski
01:05:14
@Wendy…there are a number of ways to get content from Google Classroom into Canvas. I know this will be covered in a future training (I believe next Friday)...
David Stokowski
01:06:20
As of right now…there is a connection that hasn’t been activated in Canvas which will allow direct embedding of Google Drive content in Canvas.
David Stokowski
01:07:06
I imagine this will happen soon (sorry I can’t give a specific timeline)...
Whitney Hoffman
01:09:41
Can this slide deck be shared with us? For reference later on...
David Stokowski
01:11:44
Sure! Here is the link… https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1hLvn3vK9EbjVhtDyCvhfcdhVNrgIihDa-FkjSKiszZs/edit?usp=sharing I will make sure the district leaders have it in an email form as well.
Whitney Hoffman
01:11:52
Thanks :)
Jessica Renteria
01:15:54
Is adding an external url different then adding apps on canvas or do they work similarly? Because I saw say brainpop is available in the apps?
David Stokowski
01:16:19
@Jessica, the external URL piece is just a link to a website…
David Stokowski
01:17:27
Apps are “deeper” integrations into Canvas. The BrainPop app connection my require some sort of subscription to connect via the app. We have like 400+ apps, and I wish I knew more about most of them!
Jessica Renteria
01:17:42
Right, I guess my question is, related more to the apps then. I will wait until it is covered more later. Thank you
Jessica Renteria
01:18:06
Ok that's what I was thinking, thank you!
Wendy Maul
01:18:23
When they hit NEXT, does it flag that they have already completed that activity
David Stokowski
01:18:59
Cool…hopefully there will be some deeper training on those aspects as you move toward fall launch.
David Stokowski
01:19:06
@Wendy,
David Stokowski
01:19:28
…there are options to do that in modules, but it is not an automatic feature.
David Stokowski
01:19:53
This is something that can be accomplished with module “requirements.” I’ll go grab the Canvas guide on that....
Kristen Marquette
01:20:21
Have you found that best practice would be to set up courses for each subject area then download the template (maybe the week by week one) for each subject area course?
David Stokowski
01:21:16
@Wendy…here’s the guide on that…it’s a bit more advanced than we were planning on getting to today…but hey…explore!
David Stokowski
01:21:17
https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26297-how-do-i-add-requirements-to-a-module
Wendy Maul
01:21:38
@David, thank you for the resource
David Stokowski
01:21:56
@Kristen…I would generally bring in the template FIRST…simply because when you bring over the content from Commons, it can get messy on top of your content.
David Stokowski
01:22:49
It’s generally best to copy content into an empty course…
hlemnah
01:23:05
How do I delete a course?
David Stokowski
01:23:15
DON’T! Kidding…
Susannah Otto
01:24:25
Can you create a module for each student that only they can see? I'm a Special Education Teacher and would like the idea of the Module but each student would need a different path
Mrs. Felix
01:25:28
If we are ding all of this in our Sandbox, can we keep all the work we did in the course to publish? Or is the Sandbox for training only?
Mrs. Felix
01:25:36
*doing
David Stokowski
01:26:01
@Mrs. Felix…you can copy content from your Sandbox into your student facing courses at ay point…and you can CHOOSE which content you copy.
Mrs. Felix
01:26:24
thank you
David Stokowski
01:26:49
Sandbox is for “playing” or building…nothing built is ever wasted time…we can always move where we need it.
Whitney Hoffman
01:29:19
But does 1 course go to 1 Aeries subject? or can 1 course go to ALL aeries subjects?
Jeff Luttrell
01:30:26
@whitney - there is a way to cross-list your courses into one course tile, but this is dependent on how the gradebook system is setup
Susannah Otto
01:34:18
If I wanted to be added as an "Observer" later, who is the best contact to talk to or do I need to contact someone in my district?
hlemnah
01:34:18
Question to team: Would it help to start with a "Homeroom" Course with general info, i.e. class schedule and such? I hesitate to create subject courses yet.
strujillo
01:34:39
So, are you basically building your subject on commons and then sending it to sandbox?
Whitney Hoffman
01:34:57
No, you are importing your template from Commons into your Sandbox so it looks nice.
Whitney Hoffman
01:35:19
Then, you build from Sandbox Edit only.
David Stokowski
01:36:07
@Susannah, teachers can add users to their courses (like observers). You could contact individual teachers to be added…they may also be another method the district will use later (that is more structured than ad hoc adding).
strujillo
01:36:09
Thank you Whitney, then...do you publish from sandbox?
Whitney Hoffman
01:36:18
I like the Homeroom idea Helene and then we can focus on that while we wait for our information from Aeries.
Whitney Hoffman
01:36:49
Steven - Essentailly, Yes :) The Canvas people will help us get that published.
Susannah Otto
01:37:18
Okay thanks
David Stokowski
01:37:32
@strujillo…you can find pre-built content in the Canvas Commons, and then import into your Sandbox. Then you can start building in that course that contains the template content you brought in.
hlemnah
01:37:36
I am planning to include my back to school slide deck in my homeroom "course." Of course, it would be best to know what back to school will look like!!!
strujillo
01:37:46
Can you do editing and deleting from sandbox?
David Stokowski
01:38:05
@strujillo…you wouldn’t published the sandbox…but copy that content into the Canvas courses that will (eventually) be created by Aeries.
hlemnah
01:40:19
I thought the color overlay was to color code assignments within the courses to make it user friendly to students.
strujillo
01:41:24
So, I just want to make sure, but let's say that once your sandbox is created, can you add and delete items at a future date?
Mrs. Felix
01:43:05
@strujillo that's what I was wondering... if Sandbox will go away or stay forever to use.
David Stokowski
01:43:14
@strujillo…yes. Build, create, share, copy at any point from Sandbox!
David Stokowski
01:43:24
Sandbox will be available for as long as you are with the district.
Kristen Marquette
01:44:15
How do you delete a template if you'd like to choose a different one?
Kristen Marquette
01:44:57
Ok, thanks.
KristyWarren
01:45:04
Is there a way to share modules?
hlemnah
01:45:06
Thank you, David and Jeff.
KristyWarren
01:45:56
Seems like there would be benefit to working with grade level teams to share content. Thanks!
hlemnah
01:47:24
Yes, Kristy. I think we will start establishing that tomorrow.
Alec Morgan
01:48:16
thank you
Heidi Kingdon
01:48:20
thank you
Mrs. Felix
01:48:22
thank you!
Whitney Hoffman
01:48:22
Thank you
Bea Coronado
01:48:25
Thank you
KristyWarren
01:48:25
Great session, thank you!
Susannah Otto
01:48:26
Thank you
Whitney Hoffman
01:48:43
What even IS friday???
strujillo
01:48:50
All information is good. Thank you!
Jeff Luttrell
01:48:54
Summer won’t feel like summer!
