Who can see your viewing activity?
Yasuko, are PT instructors logging in for attendance via the separate link similar to last week found in the email? Or the link you will post later in this chat? I didn’t see a link in the email for this week. Thank you!
This training is hosted by eLearning so EVERY faculty will be eligible for the stipend. Please sign in this form: https://forms.gle/5MkmtLv7kFkBwvXGA
Got it, thank you!
What happens if the enrolment does not divide evenly into 4 (or whatever number)?
I just played the jeopardy theme in class today:)
Do you have to set a group leader? can the group still submit work?
This member switch would take a long time to do in our current LM system!
@Jon - I agree. I enjoy the drag and drop in Canvas so much.
Do the students know they are in a group when it is set up automatically? Or does the group have to be "published" first? Wondering if they can see themselves being "rearranged"
How are assignments added to a group?
Are the students going to be trained to do all this or is it up to us to train them?
@Wendy. I have the same questions as I like group work with BB assigning the groups.
eLearning will include the information in the Student canvas training module.

Also, is the Online orientation that students need to take before being authorized to take online courses reflecting Canvas skills right now?
When students submit a doc in the group setting, can they download the doc onto their computer? Or is it for viewing only by the group members.
My main problem in our current system is getting my students to actually notice that they are in a group!
Good question, Sean!
@Sean - The online orientation will be switched to Canvas version very soon.
Sara Henson (she/hers)
Is there an automated way to have Canvas groups recreated in zoom or do we have to do that ourselves in zoom?
Having a shared workspace for the groups within Canvas is HUGE! Especially as an instructor where I can see their progress. Bb doesn't allow for this.
@yasuko It appears to me the online orientation should be required for every student so they are required to learn Canvas. I don't have time or know enough to train them...
I agree with John.
@John - We are going to place the Canvas training module in every student's dashboard. Online Orientation is a prerequisite so it gets little complicated to require every student to take it...
Many of our students are already familiar with canvas, either through OSU or some of the local schools
Any kid coming out of BLP schools has been using Canvas for the past two years now
I apologize if I missed this, but can we group students together who are enrolled in different courses?
@Ann - Redmond School District has changed to Canvas as well.
I created a group to assign later in my class but no Groups item shows up on the left-hand menu
Attendance form: https://forms.gle/5MkmtLv7kFkBwvXGA
@Ann - same here
Sorry. I don't have a mic. That makes sense. Thank you.
sorry, then how do I get to the groups to do things with it?
@Yasuko -- is it possible to add "dummy" students to our course?
@Wendy - Oh, good question! I thought we could but let me check on that!
Good question @WH. I have the same question @ yasuko
Can we drag and drop the order of groups?
So just for clarification, you have to have people in groups in order to actually set up items into the group? So no adding assignments or discussion topics until the groups are formed with people?
I @ Wendy. yes. I think that is why this is so confusing right now because I can make a group in general but not put any people in it
@Ann -- that's my problem too.
Question with regard to automatically setting up groups in Zoom from Canvas:Export the groups in canvas and upload the csv file into zoom breakout rooms. Remember the emails need to match. It helps to require Authentication for the account so students are logged into zoom with the same email as their canvas account
This looks complicated
@Ann -- set up your Group set and choose one of the assign students option and then the groups show up. I just did that and it worked :-)
Sara Henson (she/hers)
Do not have students
we do not
Not until students start registering for winter
@Wendy, thanks, I did that, but I wanted to look at discussion board and stuff for each group and can’t do that without actual groups
Is this group function set for the term or can different groups be created for different assignments?
Can you assign students to specific groups and not let them pick the group that everyone wants?
@Cassandra - Yes, you can assign students to the specific group.
Can you have the due date after the end of the assignment being available?
nvm--I see that changed
Where is the assignment link in the group so students can access them?
You had due Nov. 1 and available until Nov. 5
What does it look like to the instructor when they submit a group assignment?
But the student would have to know to click that tiny little link on the right.
It isn't very obvious...
Can a group assignment be added in a module like other assignments. I am trying to limit the number of links they are clicking.
Just throwing this idea out to the group... As you all can see, migrating and getting everything functional in Canvas is involved and time consuming. It will be a great move once processes are understood, practiced and implemented. My question, are you going to be able to competently do this by the beginning of winter term for all your classes? Since we have Blackboard until next July, would it be better to push the migration to Canvas until spring term? I want my students' experience to be good and I don't know if this will be possible with the tight turn around. It is taking longer than I thought and I am working on it every day. Trying to get a pulse on your thoughts.
Would this even be possible????
Please do not forget to sign in: https://forms.gle/5MkmtLv7kFkBwvXGA
@Sean - I am sorry. It is not possible because of the user data migration will disconnect Blackboard.
How's everyone doing? Do you need more time?
@ Sean - I totally agree - I am working 50+ hours a week and still feel like I am not close to being ready.
@Yasuko - Do you mean we have BB access but cannot use it for teaching due to data migration?
I feel the same way, every hour I am not teaching, grading, advising, etc. I am trying to migrate my classes and it is VERY TIME CONSUMING.....
Christina Grijalva (she/her)
Student enrolment data is transmitted from Banner to LMS. As of winter 22, the data is going to Canvas. Only the students who received "incomplete" will have access to Fall 21 Blackboard courses.
Ready for the last piece!
I think you lesson is good. The overall migration is difficult and time consuming.
Why can't data migrate to both?
Have done. Still a lot of worki
I personally don't know how and why of IT questions but our suggestion of piloting Canvas while running Blackboard was declined long time ago.
I may end up treating Canvas like Blackboard as much as I can for the first term or two I use it. I've never created modules and have found redesigning my courses into modules while also learning Canvas to be intimidating and time-consuming. So I may just stick with the way I'm used to setting up my courses while getting used to using Canvas.
Makes sense, Stephanie.
I agree, Stephanie (although I do use modules of a sort in Blackboard). I'll worry about it in Fall :)
Your explanations are useful, Donna! I love this group function as I teach Small Group Comm and Canvas would make group work so much easier than Bb. The frustration posted here is not directed to you:)
If I have a rubric for a group assignment, can I mark up the rubric for one person and then it gets posted to other people’s grades in that group as well?
@ Stephanie - I have done just the opposite - I have taken BB and I am attempting to align it as much as I can to Canvas - so I have been remodeling my courses in BB to be module based and then I have seen that the course that is module based in BB migrates just a bit smoother than remodeling everything in Canvas. That is probably because I understand BB a whole lot better than I do Canvas.
Julie Keener (she/her)
Can students set up their own Collaborations groups within a course or does the instructor have to set up the groups?
@ Marilyn--I honestly never understood what a module was until this past summer when I took a Learners Edge course that was organized that way. I understand the concept now, but it's just not how I think or how I organize my content. Your way would be easier for me if my thinking and organization were not naturally suited to the "file cabinet" way of doing things that Blackboard has.
so if they collaborate on a document then they can turn that doc in for the assignment?
@ Stephanie - I am constantly "going back to the file cabinet" so I understand your pain. I actually like the file cabinet with its large hanging files and folders inside them. That is how I think as well.
@Everyone - Office 365 is a part of COCC single sign on. That means students do not need to create an account to use it.
If I have a rubric for a group assignment, can I mark up the rubric for one person and then post it to other people’s grades in that group as well?
Thank you. Your presentation was very helpful. Your pacing is excellent.
This has been great, Donna. Thank you so much!!
