Rocky Allinger (she/her)
21:24
Doesn't the accessibility checker built into the Canvas text editor check color contrast? I was pretty sure that it did . . .
Adam Hechler
22:13
The “Published” button on pages in Canvas doesn’t pass contrast accessibility.
Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin
22:28
Well, that's pretty cool.
Adam Hechler
22:29
Of course, students don’t ever see that.
Kyle Cole
23:11
Hi Adam, you are able to change that in Admin > Theme.
Adam Hechler
23:44
Thanks Kyle. That’s good to know. I don’t think we changed that in our theme though.
Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin
25:49
Put them in a table or a list
Melissa McCartney
26:47
I don't see where you can edit the publish button in the themes
Heidi Burgiel she/her
28:57
We're not allowed to use CSS.
Debbie Beaudry
30:27
Can you share the link to this video?
Ron Goodwin
30:35
We have a student that will use J.A.W.S.
Debbie Beaudry
31:11
Could you share the video about using styles
Nirisha Garimella
31:12
Debbie: We will add it to the handout that will be posted to our website https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Higher-Ed-Services/gh-p/highered-cs
Heidi Burgiel she/her
31:20
We call this "The paragraph menu".
Neil from PC
32:55
After using headings is there free screenreader you recommend we can use to test them?
Kyle Cole
33:18
Hi Melissa, I stand corrected you will need to use CSS to change the color of the publish button.
Elhanna Porter
33:25
You can try using NVDA as a free screen reader.
Rocky Allinger (she/her)
33:54
Some browser extensions also provide free screenreader tools.
Adam Hechler
34:00
Mac has Talk Over and Windows you can use NVDA.
Tara Chambers
34:01
This one may work for you: https://www.nvaccess.org/download/
Neil from PC
34:32
Thank you!
Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin
34:37
I use these little bookmarklets to check accessibility. (on pc), I drag them into my bookmarks bar and then they act like a button: https://pauljadam.com/bookmarklets/
Nirisha Garimella
34:58
Folks: Please do feel free to share resources here, we are curating it and will post it on our website
Mark White
35:03
Narrator is the pc version. In Windows 10, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter on your keyboard.
Tara Chambers
35:43
NVDA works with Respondus as well.
Julia Angel
36:46
How do you get accessibility checker on a mac
Heidi Burgiel she/her
36:48
This is great -- thanks!
Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin

Adam Hechler

@Julia - if you use Chrome or Firefox, you can install WAVE from webaim.org.
Neil from PC
38:04
Thank you
Julia Angel
38:14
Thanks again!
Joyce
39:17
We do
Heidi Burgiel she/her
39:26
We have Panopto. Same principle.
Rocky Allinger (she/her)
39:28
WebCaptioner.com is also helpful.
Adam Hechler
40:29
We use Mediasite. We have a way to add captions, and we do.
Caroline Toy
40:44
Occasionally YouTube videos are set to allow community captioning where you can add captions to videos you don’t own. This is pretty rare.
Rocky Allinger (she/her)
41:08
Microsoft Office 365 also has excellent auto-captioning with Stream, if you use Office 365.
Christy Culver
41:12
Microsoft Stream works well for creating closed captioning
Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin
41:28
Thank you!
Claude Abbott
41:36
Yes, I participated in a webinar yesterday, but they went too fast
Neil from PC
41:40
Wow, I had no idea, thank you!
KEVIN GLOVER
42:19
Can captioning be turned off by individual learners?
Nirisha Garimella
42:51
In Studio, you have to turn it on
KEVIN GLOVER
42:53
Thanks
Rocky Allinger (she/her)
43:02
There are some great immersive reader browser extensions. The immersive reader tool built into Canvas only works on pages (not assignments or quizzes), so our school is recommending that students use the Microsoft Immersive Reader browser extension.
Neil from PC
43:03
So Microsoft is beatGoogle on translating captions on the fly?
Amoreena Aspenwall-Fredin
43:08
I love bringing my own school readings into Word and having it read them to me with the immersive reader.
Nirisha Garimella
44:08
Rocky: Great point about immersive reader.
Rocky Allinger (she/her)
44:09
@Neil- I've found Microsoft Stream's captioning to be more accurate than Google (personal anecdotal evidence, not data)
Nirisha Garimella
45:28
FYI: Immersive reader in only available on PAGES in Canvas.
Neil from PC
45:42
Thank you! Another good find: Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader. I have this installed in chrome and it works great but I’m not using it to read headers just text
Nirisha Garimella
46:10
TY Neil
Iva Lovell
46:11
Are there plans to add immersive reader to assignments? Or is it just going to be for pages in Canvas?
Melissa McCartney
46:28
Nirisha, does that mean that Quizzes cannot be read aloud
Iva Lovell
46:45
thx
Rocky Allinger (she/her)
46:59
…. but students can use browser extensions in their Quizzes
Isaac Combs
