PCOE Canvas Training - Shared screen with speaker view
Who can see your viewing activity?
Thanks so much!
How do I access the recording? it helps to hear it again.
@Jennifer, I believe Kristy will be emailing it out after this session
We can use any of these lessons?
@Maria - yes, they are free and accessible to all Canvas users
@Maria You’re welcome :)
When exporting grades to an SIS gradebook, is it necessary to have separate courses for subject matter to go into a subject gradebooks?
I like the home page(s) on the Early Learners Template. The templates are a real time saver.
Commons wanted access to MYACCOUNT. Is that just the Canvas account? What else is involved in giving Commons access?
@Jennifer - it’s just recognizing your Canvas account - so yes, click authorize the first time (you shouldn’t have to do this again)
Is there a limit to the number of sandboxes?
@Yvone, there is not a limit to the number of sandboxes
where is the sandbox? how do I get there?
Kara, I'll check your account to make sure you have it.
@Kara — the sandbox is just a name for the course that you created
Can you change the commons template once you have set that?
@Kristin - if you have imported a template and you’re not into it anymore, you can click Settings - Reset Course Content and it will wipe that template (and everything else in that course) from the Course. You can also delete all the things that you don’t want to use from the template
Is there an undo button?
Ctrl + z is the undo keyboard shortcut (or command + z on a Mac)
I was looking for the undo button too Melissa. Good to know!
There is an auto-save function coming this fall to the rich content editor, so it will be more friendly in that sense :)
Will one of you send me the URL for Canvas? My password isn't working and I think I'm in the wrong place. It worked fine before!
are the pages mobile ready?
yaaa! Thank you!!
Nice to know auto save is coming!
We’re so use to Google, having to click save will be important.
@Piper - yes! The pages are responsive to a variety of devices. There is also a Canvas Teacher and Student app (and Parent app) on Android and Apple store
If we import it into our existing sandbox we will have tons of modules. Does it make sense to start over?
@Nancy…that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I personally would import a template first…and then add my content second...
I would simply create a new course from your Dashboard page...
Thank you. I love this example.
The pages you just showed us are great for the little ones, but how in the world do you do that? Will this be included in any of our asynchronous trainings?
There are great design tools to make those navigation buttons: Canva.com and Google Draw (you create in Drawing, download as a PNG/jpeg) are two of my favorites
Great, thank you!
What is the difference between a Home Page and a Front Page?
@Camille - if you want to set a Page as your Homepage, you need to set that Page as a Front Page first, and then select the Pages Front Page as your Home page. See the documentation here: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26409-how-do-i-set-a-front-page-in-a-course

We have district curriculum we use. How do we import pages from Journeys workbook or anthology, and Eureka Math pages for assignments?
@Jennifer - Not sure about Journeys, but the district I work with uses Eureka Math and they attach a PDF from Eureka to an Assignment for kids to do
If Eureka is a PDF - the families then have to print to complete correct?
As we explore distance learning, we need to evaluate which curriculum is appropriate for asynchronous learning. For math, let’s take a look at utilizing Zearn.
@Emily - yes - there are some ways to work around that like embedding a PDF in a Google Slide and adding text boxes for kids to complete. There are also PDF annotation tools (Kami comes to mind) that allows kids to annotate over a PDF and submit
Zearn ended up being one of my best successes these past few months
My students that have used Zearn love it!
It is good to know Google Slides can be used in Canvas, too.
@Nancy - yup! Google Apps all integrate nicely into Canvas. I believe next week this will be discussed/taught
@Jeff is FlipGrid one of the apps that integrates with Canvas?
I integrated Flipgrid today. It is.
Can we make math module, writing module and reading modules and then put them together into a weekly module to present to students?
can we get all the links in the question/answer chat box emailed so we can access it later? my brain is full right now
I have been compiling Q & A into the Daily C & I FAQ: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SC4U7H6YH0HTwvaChvyHwWqfafoXiUrKVkAYitiqT1s/edit?usp=sharing
I was about to start the gradebook module earlier today in the training videos - how is that going to work with Aeries? Double grade entry? Mergable?
How do we share with other teachers? I haven't finished the first course yet. Can we share a course?
Thank you. I like the buttons that the students can push daily to go to the assignments. I am not sure how that will work with multiple courses that you had mentioned or even with those modules.
I have a question about submitting assignments in the asynchronous learning modules on canvas training. Can we use screenshots pasted into a word document for our assignments? For example, to show that I created an event, assignment, etc.
@Mary - in the Assignment, there is a directions box (which is basically the same editing tools and windows from the Rich Content Editor) where you can insert images and text to explain to students how to do the Assignment.
@Mary, yes. I did that when I worked on the Growing with Canvas assignments.
ok, thank you Jeff and Yvonne!
Would you demo how a kiddo might respond using flipgrid? Basically, can you show us how to put the flipgrid external tool into the discussion in the module?
@Kellie - here’s a demo on YouTube of how to do that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nROCBzRl8l8
Perfect. Thank you.
LTI's need you to make your own account set up through them, then?
You will need an account there (depending on the app in question) —
Flipgrid yes, you need a free flip grid account. Same goes for nearpod or brain pop
Can you mention the Live Chat help?
Thank you David and Jeff!
I appreciate the help!
Thank you all!!!
I just tried the Training Service Portal and it require sign in but my Canvas password doesn't work.
Thank you so much, I'm excited!
Thank you. Very helpful!
